DB Cargo is on an ambitious journey to become Europe’s leading rail logistics provider with a long-term plan to shift traffic from roads, protect our climate and grow the economy. We have an exciting opportunity for two Operational Controllers to join the finance team.

The business consists of 11 legal entities and is ultimately owned by Deutsche Bahn AG. The Finance team is based in Doncaster however we have adopted hybrid office / home working post Covid 19 and staff are typically in the office for a few days at period end and one day per week.

The finance reporting regime to the parent in Germany is intensive with calendar period end results reported on day five, with significant group reporting requirements around this. The group forecasting and budgeting regime is intensive with 3 formal forecast submissions per year plus mid term plan (MTP) for the following 5 years. There is also a requirement to submit a forecast for the current month c. day 10 of the current month.

Our finance system is SAP R3K and there is extensive use of TM1 (to be upgraded to planning analytics in December 2021). The business also uses Power BI.

The Operational Controllers will join either the Operational or Group controlling team to support the business partnering activities of that finance team. The roles would also be known as a Management Accountants or Finance Business Partners within the UK.

The roles will provide financial and analytical support to the operational and commercial teams to proactively interpret and explain financial performance with the aim of improving EBIT.

The roles will include some tasks for the month end accounting/reporting process relating to operations and sales.

Where relevant the role will produce forecasts, budgets and mid-term plans for their area with the appropriate narrative, in addition to supporting their counterparts in operations and commercials during business reviews. Forecasting and budgeting requirements for the group are quite intensive.

The roles will ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting for their areas of responsibility and provide explanations of performance and variance analysis each period.

Depending on allocated areas of responsibility, the position may also be required to own specific tasks within the finance team such as stock controlling, grant submissions, etc.

The role requires a hands on approach as the team is small and business demands are high.

The roles are open to candidates of varying levels of experience as we have flexibility to allocate tasks to fit with levels of competency and practical experience.

Similarly, the candidates could be a part qualified accountant or qualified by experience – attitude and ability to provide a good business partnering experience within an operational environment are more important than qualifications.

The candidates must have comprehensive experience of previous management accounting roles including completion of monthly management accounts, producing forecasts, budgets and variance analysis with narrative.

The candidates should also have experience of supporting commercial and operational managers with costing commercial and operational proposals, and be confident to challenge assumptions in that process.

Accuracy and attention to detail is important, as to is integrity.

Experience of working in an operational or complex business (preferably rail or logistics) is important especially in building stakeholder relationships within operational, commercial and group functions.

A working knowledge of SAP R3k and Cognos TM1 would be a significant advantage

The roles are based in Doncaster but with hybrid home working. Office attendance circa 1 or 2 days a week.
