Position Summary
Reporting to Dean of Arts, Science and Technology, the Lab Technician is responsible for providing technical support to instructional faculty in preparing the CIS Laboratory at the Campbell River Campus for start of semester and in the effective delivery of curriculum; the successful candidate will also assist students in the technical requirements of the Computer Information Systems Certificate program when and where necessary.
The Lab Technician is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College, incorporating and practicing the values in everything they do.
Position Competencies
Duties & Responsibilities
TECHNICAL SUPPORT: PC LABS
1. Work with Information Technologies Department Network/Systems Analyst to maintain efficient operations of the main CIS lab and ancillary labs, if necessary.
2. Assist IT with the lab equipment replacement and cascade of computer systems.
3. Annual set up of lab systems preferences and customization.
4. Install minor software updates to lab devices.
5. Maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment.
6. Monitor any cloud based or remote platforms as needed.
STUDENT & FACULTY CURRICULAR SUPPORT
1. In consultation with instructional faculty deliver technical demonstrations for digital technologies.
2. Provide general technical support and advice to students and faculty for software and hardware in the program computer lab.
3. Support student registration in external web hosting.
4. Supports student registration in specialized external software.
5. Provide advice and information in troubleshooting problematic files.
6. Supports the technical requirements of CIS program events.
7. Develops technical instruction and reference materials as required.
PROGRAM OPERATIONS
1. Administration and maintenance of program equipment inventory database, including ongoing data entry for new department equipment and decommissioning (in consultation with the dean) of non-functioning equipment.
2. Maintenance of computer labs and virtual/cloud platforms as needed
3. Monitors budgets, completes purchase requisitions, maintains accurate inventory, and ensures sufficient supplies of consumables are available to meet instructional and operational requirements.
4. Responsible for recommendations for system capital purchases.
5. In consultation with the faculty, researches new equipment, products and materials for department programs.
6. Responsible for the security of all lab equipment.
7. Liaises with the Manager, Facilities Operations department, as required, regarding student first aid, equipment security, student security, space use, and storage of equipment and furniture.
8. Accountable for maintaining a safe and clean environment in the studio and labs and by adhering to WHMIS, WCB Regulations, Colleges’ occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Completion of required MSDS forms and effective monitoring of a disposal program for all hazardous materials in use.
9. Participates in department meetings as required by the dean, prepares and presents information as requested.
10. Performs additional related duties in other program areas or other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Education & Experience
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
1. Demonstrated organizational, prioritization and time management skills.
2. Ability to trouble shooting cross platform issues.
3. Experience with network servers.
4. Database administration or development experience.
5. Extensive working knowledge of PC operating systems, including Windows and Linux.
6. Familiarity with virtualization and cloud computing.
7. Knowledgeable with various computer systems, hardware, software and related computer equipment.
8. Experience managing budgets and inventory.
9. Strong communication skills and able to converse with and support those students, faculty and employees who are not technologically proficient.
10. Ability to demonstrate, and direct faculty, students and staff in the safe and effective use of equipment in the department computer labs.
11. Capable of working independently and responding to issues positively, application of problem-solving skills, organization and planning, and time management skills, in managing a range of priority projects and tasks.
12. Effectual team member in the execution of duties and responsibilities, knowledge of policies and procedures, dealing with equipment faults.
13. Effective interpersonal and team working skills, supported by demonstrated oral and written communication skills, critical thinking, time management, presentation and training skills.
14. Capacity to perform physically demanding work in a safe manner, ability to lift and carry 22 kg, and WHIMS certification is required.
15. Familiarity with inventory control software would be an asset.
