About The Position
A secondary school librarian manages the library media center as an intellectual hub and refuge for advanced and twice-exceptional learners, fostering deep reading engagement, independent inquiry, and self-advocacy while collaborating across the school community to meet complex, asynchronous learning needs. They collaborate with teachers to integrate resources into the curriculum, manage the collection, and provide a welcoming space for inquiry and study. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a satisfactory manner while possessing a deep understanding of intellectually gifted and twice-exceptional learners. Commitment to the school and its mission is essential. This is a 10 month salaried position.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) preferred
- State library media licensure or teaching certificate required (as applicable by state)
- Minimum 3 years of experience working in a school library or educational setting
- Experience working with gifted, twice-exceptional, or neurodiverse learners strongly valued
- Previous classroom teaching experience preferred
- Criminal background check required for hire
- Familiarity with twice-exceptionality, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), asynchronous development, and differentiated instruction frameworks
- Advanced computer software skills including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, library management systems, and research databases
- Knowledge of and comfort with assistive technology tools
- Ability to use initiative and independence in collection development and program design
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds

- Occasional evening events or family education sessions may be required.
- Regular, on site, attendance is required for this position.

Responsibilities
- Teach research, database searching, source evaluation, and ethical use of information — with deliberate scaffolding for 2e learners (e.g. executive function supports, UDL frameworks) and open-ended depth for gifted students who exhaust grade-level resources
- Develop and support independent inquiry projects and passion-driven research strands
- Act as a knowledgeable resource and informal advocate for twice-exceptional students; recognize profiles of asynchronous development — high intellectual ability alongside learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or anxiety
- Develop and support both student and teachers’ AI literacy
- Help students develop self-advocacy and metacognitive skills
- Curate a collection that spans well beyond grade-level expectations: dual-exceptionality narratives, high-complexity nonfiction, primary sources, biographies of neurodivergent thinkers, and materials at reading levels that match intellectual rather than chronological age
- Maintain audiobooks, graphic nonfiction, and assistive-format materials for 2e learners with print-related challenges
- Cultivate a community of serious young readers through philosophy, science, history, and speculative fiction reading groups; Socratic discussions; and mentored access to adult-level literature for students who are ready
- Create and maintain a library environment where intellectual intensity is celebrated, not stigmatized
- Collaborate with gifted coordinators, special education staff, and classroom teachers to embed extension and enrichment into curriculum units
- Co-design tiered research projects, independent study contracts, and compacted curricula
- Participate in IEP, 504, and gifted services planning where library-based supports are relevant
- Maintain and instruct students in library technologies, with particular attention to: Assistive technology (text-to-speech, voice input, digital annotation) that removes barriers for 2e learners, Advanced research databases and tools for gifted learners pursuing college- or professional-level inquiry
- Manage budget, circulation, library staff/volunteers, and day-to-day library operations
- Maintain a physical environment that accommodates varied sensory and learning needs — flexible seating, quiet zones, and low-stimulation spaces alongside collaborative areas
- Participate in curriculum planning, school initiatives, and professional development related to gifted and 2e education
